earBuzz Review:
buyers note: Download CD does not include cover songs that are included on physical CD. Torch's 2007 release, "Charmed", is an honest recording that features, only, fine music. No production or mastering tricks are employed as far as we can hear - and the result is a clean and enjoyable musical jazz vocal experience. The CD starts out with a fanciful track called, "The Colder Months". Penned by vocalist, Seela, the track takes it's musical turns with piano and jazz guitar solos - lyrically the portrait is of an enigma of an individual, 'i'm pretty sure you're not faking, i changed my plans and now i'm waiting. .you want to disappear, you'd trade your car for an older one, summer and fall for the colder months, cause it means something to me, that you could never be, something to me'. Track 2, "Is It Enough", brings up the pace and walking groove with a laid-back confident high energy jazz taste. There's a certain amazing strategy to the tunes on the record. .as 'Colder. ." and "Is it Enough" show off Torch's smokey jazz chops and energy. .track 3 hits and immediately establishes the finest melody on the record. Indeed, "Just Say the Word", has all the markings of a classic song - memorable melody, penetrating lyrics 'i would sing like lark for you if you asked me to, i'd stay out of a bar or two, bring the party back home, never to roam', and intimate delivery supported by, again, honest and organic performances by the band. There are a few cover tunes on the record available on the physical CD only - a particular highlight is Duke Ellington's "Caravan" done live with a subtle guitar and vocal intro. If it gets better than Torch, we haven't heard it yet.
