earBuzz Review:
With a punk rock pop dose of revenge and distorted driven guitar sound, Sonic Avenues releases their self-titled 4 song-EP. All tunes are a radio-friendly 3 minutes or less. The record opens with "Off the Ground (Ready to Get Back at You) with melodic harmonies and a youthful almost garage-band arrangement complete with quick rock drum breaks and frantic guitar solos that have their origin in the 3-chord love that has defined the genre for decades. Track 2, "Driftin' Apart", continues with a medium groove and encompassing guitar sound. The mastering/mixing process employs a tasty over-driven painting across all tracks, and Driftin' is no exception. There is a whimsy that gives a nod of the guitar to the recording techniques of the 60's and 70's where the analog saturation blended the music into a poppy wall of rock sound. The result is a uniquely fresh atmosphere that seems to encourage a memorable season of music and partying. Towards the end of the tune the bass/vocal/drum break gives space that reminds us of The Clash with politics the are born from relationships. Track 3, "Sinful Eye", is thread with the same needle with three chords and lyrics that are pop-blended to encourage listeners to argue over content. We heard, but could be wrong, to 'you know everything in the world turns to grey, when you bring me down'. Track 4, "Close to You", finishes off the journey with the same pop energy that is a constant on this debut EP. The familiar beat is a jump to the floor mood and they sing, 'all the love is gone, should i just close my eyes or waste another night. .whoaa. .' And. .abruptly with sugar the tune and the album ends leaving us wanting to hear more - which, predictably, we will, considering the undoubted accessibility and appeal of the effort.
