earBuzz Review:
Heavy Metal may be a dated classification, but the music itself is very much alive. Modern day devotees refer to the edgy genre simply as Metal. Artists like Metallica, Megadeth, and Ozzy Osbourne helped bring the once feared culture to the forefront in the late 80's. Using avenues like MTV and nationally sponsored tours; these acts grew their fan bases substantially, and so the record business could no longer keep them on the backburner. This opened the door for all metal bands, and a few chose to make their medium not only a sounding board for their music, but for their political beliefs as well. Babylon Mystery Orchestra has done just that with their aptly titled "Axis of Evil" record. The power chords of "Islam" slam the message home, while the chorus ebbs like a classic gothic anthem. The marriage works splendidly. The mellow, string plucking introduction on "Illuminati" sets the stage for this building story of apocalypse brought on by the few that supposedly rule the many. "Martyr" is the ballad of the record, steeped in melodic despair and hate. Axis of Evil is for those who love powerful guitar licks, heavy lyrics, and a musical kick in the gut. MM
