earBuzz Review:
Barbara Dennerlein's professional accomplishments read as a lifetime award winner. She has garnered respect across the globe for the masterful command of her chosen instrument, the Hammond B3 organ. Her albums have won many honors, such as the German Record Critics Award. Her album Take Off (Verve/Universal) reached number 1 in the jazz charts and was the best-selling German jazz album of the year. She has graced the stage at many festivals worldwide, such as the Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton, and Victoria jazz fests. She has also blown the doors off New York's prestigious Blue Note cafe. On It's Magic we have Dennerlein on the B3 with excellent drumming as an accompaniment. "Change of Pace" is a cut that never stops building, and her finger work on the organ is mesmerizing. "Make It Spicy" is aptly titled, as it shows a funkier side of the artist. She lets her hair down on this one, and the crowd feels it as they clap along with her feverish jam. The Hammond is an instrument that requires precision as well as the ability to take chances in order for the box to truly sing. Dennerlein plays the organ like an extension of herself, an appendage granted at birth. MM
