earBuzz Review:
Simon Smart is the creative juice behind the electronic ambient groove musical project titled, Sonanaut. His 11-track collection, "Sinking Upwards', pushes spatial instrumental choices such as ethereal voices, reverbed and echoing stick hits, sound effects of the jungle, and an hypnotic beat - specifically in the opening track, "Induction". The sole bass presence is a deep percussive electronic note the perculates on Eb. The 2nd track has Smart utilizing strings that rhythmically morph into percussion in a medium groove hollow woodish place - nice. Track 4, "Mind over Meta", hits an industrial tone. Effects and key patches pan right and left - and the groove, comprised of metallic samples and slight distortion, is suggested more than actually established - but the communication of the beat penetrates nonetheless. The approach to groove takes a 180 degree turn in track 5's "Carbon" - this is clearly floor music that pushes the beat purposefully. Smart and Sonanaut's talent is in it mixology of sound - certainly there is a thread of similarity that weaves through all the cuts on the record, however within that established space Smart bounces in every direction and every launch is delivered with convincing meaning in this exceptional instrumental collection.
