earBuzz Review:
Take a youthful innocent timbre'd voice and put it in front of a punk/rock band and you'll hear the singularly original format of the first tune on Sarah Vanderhaar. Her EP, "Demo Take One", a professionally produced 5-song record that begins with "My Declaration" - a powerful starter and attitude-ful scream for independence and the rights of the younger set. Track 2, "Hurt Me", is a more poppy trip that explains the need for pain to feel alive. Vonderhaar sings an ironic upbeat melody over lyrics, 'tell me lies they're all the same, makes me laugh hides the pain. .burn me once shame on me. .if you want to hurt somebody, hurt me, baby i'm addicted to the pain'. We hear some of the musical dramatics that came before her with Martika. Track 3, "Find Your Way Home", surprises us with a country/pop crossover beginning. It's a sweet tune about being lost - from family and self-worth. Track 4 moves genre to AC/Rock with "Are You Listening Now" with a lyrical personal dedication to her deceased father, 'i don't hate you Dad, i just only wish I said, I forgive you for your problems and the things we never did, forgive me for my anger, i forgave you for the pain, always and forever, i loved you just the same. .are you listening now, i never got to say goodbye to you my father, see you again'. Touching and heartbreaking. The final track, "Me", is more pop/rock with Vonderhaar showcasing the gentle quality of her vocal. Overall it's an ample debut with examples of the several musical areas she could pursue. For our money, we'd love to see her developing herself as a punk/rock artist - on stage in the dress she's got on the cover, with growling high energy and a demand for justice. It's a direction we haven't heard since the 70's and 80's and Vonderhaar could own if she desires it. We look forward to more.
