earBuzz Review:
"Flight" from DeeJay Mori is compelling and beautiful fusion of middle-eastern techno that combines percussion and electronic beats that groove for all 11 tracks. The CD opens with "Indo-bazzar". Hollow reverbed single-lines float atop an upbeat movement that weaves experimental sounds and laid-back male chanting. Track 2, "Hibib-joan", establishes an Africa-like movement which opens up to persian vocals and space that breathes during five minutes of meditative dance. Track 3, "Salutation", has a more traditional dance-floor beat - a track that conjures swirling strobes and dry-ice and a sea of movement. Mori has sampled poet Shamloo, and Iranian poet, in track 4's, "Moon light". He employs backwards masking and an ominous bass line that creates one of the more dramatic grooves on the record. One of the more abitious cuts on the record is "Lost in the East" - the free-form compositional nature of the track provides an assault that is nothing short of brilliant in its total sonic immersion. Great. In track 9, "Forgive Me", Mori again samples an Iranian poet - this time Maryam - and the simplicity of the track with its casio-style motif is alternative and interesting. Track 10, "Somewhere in the Distance", is our favorite on the CD - the female vocal chanting has a pace to it that is adventurous within the production. Some of the track includes what sounds like beat-boxing with part of the sampled beats based on lip rhythms. The final track, "Bezan Bereem Remix" utilizes a child's voice (or a sped up adult) over the beat that eventual makes way for a traditional Middle-Eastern folk song pasted and supported by his techno talents. Overall the record is a tremendous marriage of modern electronic dance writing and a Persian flavor that we haven't heard before. Groundbreaking stuff here - and we look forward to more.
