    Vavavoom
Genre: Acoustic, Swing, Jazz
Region: Louisiana/Alabama

   Description     Biography     Influences
VAVAVOOM? Think speed, energy, a hot chick, maybe a burlesque queen in a smoky bar on her night off, gypsy guitars, fiddle, piano, accordion. But what style of music? The short answer is a synthesis of New Orleans jazz and the French Gypsy tradition of Django Reinhardt, as well as what Jelly Roll Morton called, "the Spanish tinge." We call it New Orleans Gypsy Jazz Bistro.
It is a vibrant, energetic and contagious sound, transporting its audience into a swirl of fiery European swing and well known New Orleans tunes. It is a crossroad of traditions and an invitation to dance and to have a good time.

earBuzz Review:
CD OUT OF STOCK - What do you get when you cross fine musicianship, organic recording environments that capture the edge and the human quality of live performance in a studio, ethnic flavored compositions, solo passages that move between guitar, jazz violin/fiddle, harmonica, and accordion, and vocals mixed and created with equal presence with the percussive and deftly played instruments they float with? You get, "ahhhhhhhhh". Vavavoom's record, "Melomania", which loosely translates to "a musical love trip', has quickly become one of earBuzz's best selling records and the reason is quality. Billed as New Orleans Gypsy Jazz Bistro music, the 13 songs take the listener on as worthwhile original trip as exists. It's all here, from blues based vocal/instrumental stuff in "Blue Drag", to extensive instrumental humor and joy in "Swing 42". The record opens up with "Bossa Dorado", which serves as an introduction to the players and music to come. Each takes a preliminary bow as they enter, flash brilliance, and step back to make way for the next player. "Dark Eyes", track 6, begins with a dramatic violin introduction that reminds us briefly of "Dark Lady" - the early 70's Cher tune and then moves into a French quick-paced jazz folk tune. Track 7, "La Vie En Rose", continues in the PePe ways with female vocal gently caressing the traditional and beautiful composition. Track 11, "Caravan" (which is listed on the back as track 10) is a harmonic-minor piece of trumpet-laced cool. Nylon stringed rhythm guitar is played with fervor and moves between Spanish rhythm and be-bop chord support effortlessly. It's like stepping from a Spanish traditional dance space into Shakey's Pizza. And. .we've never heard that before. Perfect. Violin work by Neti Vaan is psychotic with musical sanity. .adventurous and satisfying. The record ends with in-the-pocket travel to Brazil that pastes an uncontrollable grin on the listener that lingers long after the five minute tune and album finishes. Really, as good as the genre gets - and we write that unabashedly from several genre's points-of-view. We look forward to a seat in New Orleans to experience this live one day as it's worth the round-trip airfare if the live show is anything like the CD - and we're sure it is. Can we say anymore?. .not really. Listen.
