earBuzz Review:
AA1 Spirit's release, "I Am That I Am", picks up where Innerworkings leaves off. Abeyta begins with "Amigo", again showcasing his compositional style of guitar-oriented instrumental work. Amigo begins with a hook that is woven around with gaps in rhythm and breaks that lay back while he works his guitar skills over the supporting tracks. Track 2, "Tears for Kenny", is an instrumental ballad that starts gently with subtle playing and moves into a right picking frenzy with lead tone that is effected with delay and reverb. At two minutes in, Abeyta slows down again into thoughtful musical contemplation and improvisation. Track 3 is a groove piece called, "Lavita". As with tracks prior, Abeyta establishes a foundation of guitar/key support and gently showcases a melody motif that eventually moves into a quicker paced electric string display. Track 5, "Freesia" reminds us of David Gilmore's work in Floyd. Here, sound effects and long string beds, tied together with sparse percussion. Abeyta plays ear candy lines of guitar from several directions - volume swells, bends, and staccato lines relax the listener with a touch of distortion. The final track, "Jessen", launches into a clean funky minor groove that hints of major resolutions. The playing is some of the best on the record and we are reminded of Jerry Garcia. The entire album is another fine collection of guitar-based tracks bent on a spiritual plane.
