earBuzz Review:
Alfred James Band combines some of the best elements of Dave Mathews unique lyrical phrasing, but with an accessibility and kindness vocally that penetrates with melodic certainty. The opening track to their CD, "Lucky if Easy", is "Airway Station" - a gem of a alternative acoustic pop writing with an essence of the Beatles and the ever-present penetrating cello by Alfred James Goodrich - sung by guitarist, Joshua Pride. The following track, "Better Days", is vocally handled by Alfred Goodrich and the difference in the two singer's provides a nice contrast to Pride's. It shines through first in track 4's, "Maker Maker", as the timbre is bare against a subtle locomotive guitar assembly - cymbals ride and kick foreshadows the depth to come. Goodrich's and Pride's vocals are well suited for each other and blend as if they were cut from the same vine. Track 5, "Regina", musically showcases Goodrich's string work in the introduction of this contrasted song of major arrangement and devastating lyric of hopelessness except for the memory of Regina. 'the music's gone i've lost my song, there's no one left to hear, all along you give me strength'. Track 6, "For Eloise", is a sweet compassionate song from a father to a daughter, 'now i have you, so come sing it loud and clear, your voice is music to my ear. .i am growing in wonder of you'. Track 7, "Brother", is a gentle instrumental combining travis bright acoustic guitar picking from Pride and soothing cello lines of melody from Goodrich. The guitar work reminds us of Stills' "Black Queen" in the short bridge. Fun and a jaw's harp along with a bridge of 'oh's' provides a spirited musical experience in track 8's, "Prickly Pear". The title track, "Lucky if Easy", lands squarely where this band lives - with Goodrich and Pride singing as a duo. The track begins a capella and moves into a brisk strumming acoustic movement that pushes the listener into a very satisfying musical place. This is as good as production/mastering gets with radio-ready sonic quality. The group has the writing skills to do well and the instrumental prowess that sets them apart - including their blended vocals. Great record.
