earBuzz Review:
Benita Hill's CD, "I'll See You In My Song", is a sweet jazz-vocal collection of standard-type songs, almost half of which were written by Hill with collaborators. Hill's voice cuts through the mix with it's perfect pitch performance and easy simple timbre that soothes. The record opens with "Love Came on Stealthy Fingers", and is a showcase for Hill and her phrasings and gentle vibrato. "Sausalito in the Summertime" follows on track-3. The tune has a more playful and different EQ'd mix vocal than 'fingers'. The mix, with Hill mixed with the instruments, gives the impression of a live/nightclub performance. The chorus is enchanting as the harmonies give a Chatanooga feel. Track 4, "I Knew Him in New York", begings with an intro that explains everything. . there's nothing like remembering sweet romance. .the song, written by Hill, is performed with sincerity that relates. Track 7, "You've Ruined it For Me", features beautiful saxophone lines by Kirk Whalum. That said, all of the musicians are first rate. The final track, "I Don't Have a Care in the World", proclaims Hill's mantra that undoubtedly lends to surviving the pains of life, she writes, 'love is my weapon and faith is the shield i wear, so i don't have a care in this world'. The tune is a wonderful way to end what is clearly a well-rounded satisfying musical experience for anyone who appreciates jazz vocals and well-written 'new' standards.
