    Sally Shuffield
Genre: Folk
Region: Rocky Mountain States US

   Description     Biography     Influences
A voice that goes down smooth as molasses and songwriting that captures the American landscape. This Americana songwriter blends the bluegrass of the Arkansas Ozarks where she grew up with the wide open spaces of the West where she resides.
"Sally Shuffield is the real deal -- an American folksinger in the traditional sense of the term." Program Director, KRZA, Alamosa, CO
"Although she shares a regional home and vocal style with othe Ozark angel, Iris Dement, Shuffield's decade-long stay in the West has tinged her song-writing with themes of coyotes and canyons, as well as lost love and rambling songs. There are plenty of reasons to be glad Shuffield rode west." No Depression Magazine
"Her voice goes down smooth and easy and she's comfortable with her music...If you love the bluegrass without the nasal twang, well-written traditional themes, pretty vocals and great instrumentation that mixes a little country and Americana into the sound, then this (album) is one for your listening collection and pleasure." earBuzz Review:
Sally Shuffield's 2001 record, "Ties That Bind", according to the liner notes is a representation of the blending of her move west and her family legacy in Arkansas. The opening and title track begins the dedication to family and deep rooted values and community. Like her most recent CD, Shuffield's country/folk writing is unabashed and direct with songs that are both story-telling and autobiographical. Track 6, "South Carolina", brutally recounts the story of a white woman who loved a black man in the south 100 years ago. Shuffield sings, 'with my blood racing fast i prayed it would last. .cause i had a child in the hills of Caroline, its Daddy was a slave. .in the cottton fields by the old stone road my Daddy killed a man. .you can't take a wife if your skin isn't white. .i lost my lover to the laws of Caroline that would not allow us to wed'. The most endearing track on the CD is track 9, "Whiskey in Heaven". Shuffield writes of her family's belief that they'll be drinkin' on the other side. 'There's an angel by his side, so he pours them back with pride, my momma's drinkin' on the other side - he said save a glass for me when you reach eternity. .when you pass those pearly gates, you can pour your whisky straight, you know you won't be drinkin' alone'. Like her song, "Kinda Easy, Kinda Slow", Shuffield's record is easy - but certainly not slow. Her delivery is beautiful and unassuming as she spins her musical tales of her life, love, and southern land.
