earBuzz Review:
Contrary to popular opinion (more stateside than European that is) writing solid and cohesive ambient music is no easy task. There are many ingredients that make for a good ambient album: Composition, choice of sounds and textures, and, most importantly, execution. Artists such as Aphex Twin, Brian Eno, and Future Sound of London (one of the artists stated influences) have not only achieved worldwide acceptance, but consistent praise from those outside the genre. These artists are always finding new ways to express themselves, and are breaking the barriers put up by critics and the closed-minded. Rey has seemingly found his own voice with Innovative Desert. The album contains differing sonic landscapes from track to track, yet manages to present the music in a way that works thematically. Combining electronic beats and pads with organic textures, Rey creates engaging peaks and valleys on Desert. The title is well suited here. His writing is vast and complex, while every cut is tied together through uniquely solid compositions. With its ethereal soundscapes and intricate melodies, Innovative Desert is a work of art, and worth a listen for any ambient fan. MM
