earBuzz Review:
Out of CD Stock - John West's studio album starts it's 13-track assault with a neck undulating groove, "Gravity". Before the upfront naked bass and drums can comfortably establish a familiar direction, extended piano arpeggios announce that this ride is going to be new. West prays, 'gravity can't own me no more' and the artistic stamp is made. Here, is a coolish New York beat Seal-like groove that is unpretentious and intelligently admirable simultaneously. West in a mono verse that surrounds the root like an idol, moves effortlessly to delicious melody in the chorus. In the following track West puts out a Stills-ish campaign to love the one he's with as he sings about the love shared once and one night only, 'would you mind if i told you i loved you just for tonight?' The timbre of the record, despite track 1's groove, is an acoustic-guitar based rhythmic base. "Masquerade", begins bare and right, 'we get lost on the surface, we get lost in the ways and the waves baby'. Piano accompanies about a minute in and helps the tune build into a lightly grooving anthem for changing ways to more truth. The record includes a few intimate less than 2-minute guitar/vocal tunes that sound like formulating ideas that may find a larger home in longer musical attempts in the future. Their inclusion is another example of the unapologetic artistic direction West takes in the thread that ties all the songs on the record together. The following track, "Hope it all works out", similarly establishes a worthy direction to end a minute thirty-seven later. The later tracks are mostly guitar and vocal, and we hear a gradually move to include tracks that we look forward to hearing in upcoming produced works. West has an artistic trump card that is interesting and talentful - so far it's halfway out of his pocket and we look forward to hearing it all.
