earBuzz Review:
J. kNOX's CD, "No Luck Involved", is the first hiphop record we've heard that has taken the Far East sounds of a koto and placed groovin' rap above it. Listen to "Dondigity". "Everybody Loves a Gangsta" gives some MJ harmony backup along with some Wild Cherry-ish guitar samplings. "It Aint No Joke" uses a recorded sermon as part of the musical tapestry. J. Knox sings, 'i'm eating 3-course meals from some food i had to steal before i ever saw a record deal'. The tune chronicles the harsh life of trying to push a musical career wtih your pockets empty. In "No One Like You", the rap turns to and R&B combo world with success. The melody to the chorus is memorable and the words follow with a reggae-rap flavor. The audio quality is good, but we hear some artifacts that aren't distracting from the music. The album works out to be 18 solid tracks of hiphop and genre-blending effort that works. We look forward to more.
