    The Bongodogs
Genre: Worldbeat, Alternative
Region: Texas

   Description     Biography     Influences
Have you ever wondered if the Rio Grande Valley has its own musical voice? Is there a musical genre that defines this little corner of the world? If you travel to South Padre Island and happen to catch a set of The Bongodogs, chances are you will come away believing that you have found it. The eclectic mix of latin, jazz, and rock, with hints of reggae and blues that makes up the Bongodogs sound comes from the heart of the Valley. Its “Spanglish” lyrics tell tales of Valley people, Valley towns, and Valley events. It is called Caliche Music, and is the brainchild of Joey Tamayo and The Bongodogs.
The Bongodogs are an energetic band, with a big, bold horn sound and loads of percolating percussion. The Caliche beat is a kind of syncopated cumbia that demands movement of the listener. The band brings audiences to their feet with original hits like “Boca Chica”, “Cuba Libre”, and “Chato’s Out of Prison”.

earBuzz Review:
The Bongodogs' 2001 CD, "Puro Caliche", is a mix of island/salsa/reggae music that features vocals that are penetrating and personal and instrumental performances that are brilliant and tight. The CD opens with "Boca Chica", and sets the consistent tone of what's to come. The horn section lays the foundation for vocals to enter -- and as they do, you immediately hear an intimate and accessible vocal delivery that sounds like a buddy with a beer in a bar, but who can sing. Track 2, "Por Ti", is sung primarily in Spanish - although there are several examples where the choice was to sing a phrase or two in English. Track 3, "Gallo", begins with a calypso like rhythm that's infectious. Track 5, "Aya Por Aya", approaches reggae with an accomplished and active bass line creating the musical compulsion here. Track 9, "Chato's Out of Prison", describes the party that's going to be held since Chato was released from the penitentiary. The CD belongs on the rotation at any outdoor party - it's full of energy, danceable grooves, and spicy moods.
