earBuzz Review:
"Tangerine Moon", is a re-release from 1997 work by Benita Hill which comes within a full-circle of tragedy as Hill, herself, was finishing treatment for lymphoma when the record was begun along with the loss of her mother, Carmen Revelle, in 2002. Embracing life's difficulties with music, Hill again performs with integrity and musical class in this 15-tune record. The final track is an actual 40s/50s radio recording of her mother's singing performance on NBC radio. The CD opens with "Dream About You", and features some tremendous guitar work that rides along a jazz edge of tension that's intoxicating. One of our favorites on the record is "Water, Water, Everywhere", as Benita sings 'seems like everybody's got somebody but me, water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink.' The light and contagious melody is wonderful. Hill hits a Broadway tone in 'Just Outside Your Heart', track 4. The songs sounds as if it could be part of a contemporary Disney movie or show. Another tremendous tune written by Hill and Pam Wolfe, "I'm Lookin' for a New 'Ol Man". The turnaround lyric focuses on the importance of the search, 'if his livin's honest and his lovin' is true, i'm lookin' for a new 'ol man'. The title track, "Tangerine Moon", has a similar tempo to Paper Moon and chorus that has infectious harmonies that are a partial throw-back to the Sisters groups of the 60s and a touch of Manhattan Transfer. The record is a jazz vocal journey of happiness of strength.
