Michael Horsphol grew up listening to classical music. This deep appreciation drove his desire to educate himself in this chosen medium. The accredited composer attended Trinity College as well as the Academy of Musicology, where he earned an Honours diploma in composition. However, the subjects that bring him inspiration lie far beyond the walls of music academia. "The wild nature of this beautiful planet we inhabit is always my inspiration." With nature as his canvas and the piano his brush, Horsphol paints streaming sonic landscapes. "Luella and the Silver Stream", an arrangement notably inspired by walks through Tongariro Park in New Zealand, is open and sparse in its composition, yet stunningly beautiful on his piano. "Luella's Fantasy" is another piece inspired by the beauty of New Zealand. This track contains more thematic peaks and valleys. The overall execution is tight and well constructed. Michael Horsphol has managed to utilize his training in order to write smart and elegant piano music that is intimate, simple, and passionate. You do not need to love Beethoven in order to fully appreciate the skill and soul that went into Piano Works. MM
