earBuzz Review:
One-woman band, Keyboard Cathy (aka Cathy Wiegand), has put together a professionally mastered/recorded 7-track AC pop collection of adult-life narratives that take aim at corporate life, love, and a special affinity for sushi. The music comes across like broadway penned musical journeys. She opens with "Miracle Worker" - an 80's high-hat moving tongue-in-cheek HR ode - as lyrics rip apart the hiring ideal, 'i need a miracle worker, knows it all from A-Z. .can't you see what i do is important, someone has to stay behind, does the impossible. .as i climb the corporate ladder, as my paycheck gets fatter, while you stay at the same level'. Track 2, "Eternity", has Cathy revealing a youthful vocal of faith as she sings, 'soon you will see, immortality, from the powers that be, will bring you back to me'. The tune works, despite the fact that this open formatted tune would benefit from a live rhythm section. Track 3 is a tribute/lesson in sushi. We've never heard a song about sushi quite like this. Cathy dips into a poppy melodic line about the fine fish food - and then narrates a guide of sorts for new-sushi-comers. We certainly agree with her affinity for green tea ice cream. Track 5, "Give a Little More", is the most dramatic of the record. The song is transparent in that it promotes giving a little more while supporting the message with sweeping strings, drums, and 70's ballad piano progression. Track 6 is a remix of Sushi Lover - and we can hear how this could be a novelty hit on the dance floor. In the final track, "So Long and thanks for the Fish", Cathy's performance and melodic content reminds us of Annie - had Annie dug sushi. At about 2 minutes in, Cathy showcases her vocal range as she layers octaves atop each other that send the upper part into the stratosphere. It's a goodbye song that is done well, with infectious melody and orchestration. We look forward to more.
