earBuzz Review:
"Guts and Gravel", the 12-song record from Dan Daniels and Your No Good Buddies, launches into the boogie-woogie rock hit, "The Teardrops Start", as honky tonk piano, harmonica, and 1/4/5 speedy guitar are supported by backbeat drums and bass. Vocals and tone are a throw back into early 60's pop and the musical highlight is a guitar solo that uses finesse and subtlety as it bridges into harmonica. The title track, "Guts and Gravel", is an apt ode to the drudges of domestic life, jail, and escape as Daniels sings, 'my wife said hon, i think we're done, kids new shoes, all we got are the blues - everything was starting to unravel living on guts and gravel'. The instrumental break features a nice melodic mandolin. Track 3, "What Would Jesus Drive?" is a 2-step mover that offers the belief that Jesus wouldn't drive a Hummer, 'what would jesus drive if he were alive, no big SUV the size of a tree, no gas guzzlin' hog making lots of smog, an efficient machine, to keep God's air clean'. Track 5, "Your No Good Buddies", is a hilarious look at getting out of the house and away from the wife, 'have been havin' a hard time with the wife, did she say you need to get out and get a life, you've been drinkin beer watchin sports, sittin there with your hand in your shorts, time to head on out and leave that strife - your no good buddies were made for you tonight. .get up dancin, forget your cares get up out of that easy chair and spend some time with your no good buddies tonight'. The final track, "Rock and Roll", is a tribute to a life of rock and roll. Like the rest of the CD, it's a pure offering of guitar based rock and roll with a dash of nostalgia and a quart of humor and fun.
